Marcelle Townsend-Cross

Singer Songwriter, Educator

 


Marcelle is a captivating and engaging performer and singer.  Originally from Newcastle, now Lismore, she graduated from Southern Cross University in 1995 with a Bachelor of Contemporary Music, majoring in vocals, music theory and Indigenous Australian studies. Prior to teaming up with Chris Fisher in Monkey & the Fish she performed with Rockinciliation  and has had a long association with the Voices Together Choir.


Marcelle is a mixed heritage Indigenous Australian of Biripi, Worimi and Irish decent and is a member of the ‘Stolen Generations’. After reuniting with her Indigenous family in 1980, she has dedicated her life to promoting, engaging and celebrating Indigenous Australian cultural values in the wider Australian society.

 

As a singer/songwriter in Monkey & the Fish Marcelle finds a vehicle for cultural, self and professional expression.   Her song ‘Mirror’ won the Indigenous/World category at the 2001 Dolphin Awards.  This song and others are on ‘In Cahoots’ - the debut CD release of Monkey & the Fish.


Marcelle also lectures in the Bachelor of Social Work degree at Griffith University Gold Coast and is currently completing a Phd at UTS.
